Traveling in January 2018 could be incredibly affordable if you knew where to look for deals. Whether you were planning a winter getaway or a spring break trip, knowing how to find working promo codes was key to saving money. Here’s how to approach travel deals from that era and apply those lessons to future trips.
Red flags to walk away from
- Promo codes that require you to share sensitive personal information upfront.
- Discounts that seem too good to be true (e.g., 90% off luxury resorts).
- Websites with no secure payment gateway (look for the padlock icon in the URL bar).
- Promo codes that expire within 24 hours of discovery, with no advance notice.
Set your budget first
Budgeting for travel in January 2018, or any time, usually starts with understanding your options. Low-budget travelers might have aimed for hostels or budget airlines, while mid-range travelers could afford modest hotels and economy flights. High-end travelers had more flexibility, but even they could benefit from promo codes that shaved percentages off already discounted rates. Depending on your destination, you might have found deals on all-inclusive packages or last-minute flights.
Common mistakes
One of the most common mistakes travelers made in January 2018 was assuming that all promo codes were legitimate. Many fell for scams promising free flights or deeply discounted hotel stays, only to realize too late that the offers were fake. Another mistake was waiting until the last minute to book, hoping for a last-minute deal. In reality, the best discounts often required booking a few weeks in advance.
Quick test: Look for reviews or testimonials from other travelers who have used the same promo code before you commit.
Loyalty programs
Loyalty programs were a game-changer in January 2018. Airlines and hotels often rewarded frequent travelers with points that could be redeemed for free flights, upgrades, or hotel stays. Some programs even offered exclusive promo codes to their members. However, the downside was that you usually needed to book directly through the airline or hotel’s website to earn points, which sometimes meant missing out on third-party discounts.
Quick test: Check if the loyalty program offers double points or bonus miles during specific periods, such as holidays or off-peak seasons.
Flexibility
Being flexible with your travel dates and destinations was another way to save money in January 2018. Many promo codes were tied to specific travel periods or less popular destinations. For example, flying mid-week instead of on weekends could save you a significant amount on airfare. Similarly, choosing a less popular destination might have unlocked exclusive discounts.
Quick test: Use fare comparison tools to see how prices fluctuate based on different travel dates and destinations.
Seasonal deals
January 2018 was a great time to find seasonal deals, especially for ski trips or tropical getaways. Many resorts offered promo codes for early-bookings or package deals that included flights, accommodations, and activities. However, these deals often required booking well in advance, and availability was limited.
Quick test: Look for promo codes that specify “limited time offer” or “early bird discount” to ensure you’re getting the best deal.
